Extradition Hub: a new global database for extradition and European Arrest Warrant case law

Extradition Hub – extradition and European Arrest Warrant case law

Extradition Hub, a new international platform entirely dedicated to extradition and European Arrest Warrant case law, is now online at www.extraditionhub.com.

Founded by Guido Stampanoni Bassi, lawyer in Milan and founder and editor of Giurisprudenza Penale, Extradition Hub is the first global database focused exclusively on extradition and EAW case law and built around the concrete dynamics of cross-border proceedings.

What is extradition?

Extradition is the legal process through which one State requests another State to surrender a person who is wanted for criminal prosecution or for the enforcement of a sentence.

By its very nature, extradition is a cross-border procedure involving two legal systems: that of the requesting State and that of the requested State. Domestic legislation, international treaties, human rights standards and the practice of the authorities of both countries may therefore interact within the same proceeding.

Within the European Union, judicial cooperation in this field is primarily governed by the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), a system of surrender between Member States based on the principle of mutual recognition of judicial decisions.

Extradition Hub: a database built around the concrete case

Extradition Hub has been developed precisely from this cross-border perspective.

Rather than organising materials exclusively according to individual domestic legal systems, the platform allows practitioners to navigate case law starting from the jurisdictions actually involved in the proceeding: the requested and requesting State in extradition cases, or the executing and issuing State in European Arrest Warrant proceedings.

This approach reflects a fundamental feature of extradition law: many of its most significant legal issues cannot be fully understood by looking at one jurisdiction in isolation.

Questions concerning, among others, prison conditions, fundamental rights, double criminality, political offences, life imprisonment, the death penalty and procedural guarantees frequently require an assessment of both the legal system requesting surrender and the legal system called upon to execute it.

Extradition Hub therefore combines:

  • curated national and international case law;
  • jurisdiction-specific legal frameworks and analysis;
  • practical and expert-driven insights.

The aim is not simply to collect judicial decisions, but to make them accessible, comparable and operationally useful for lawyers, judges, academics and institutions dealing with cross-border criminal matters.

Extradition Hub beyond the database: an international network of practitioners

Extradition Hub is also conceived as a curated international network of practitioners with specific experience in extradition and European Arrest Warrant proceedings.

Through its contributors, the project seeks to provide insight into local law and procedural practice, identify practitioners with relevant expertise in different jurisdictions and facilitate professional connections where a case requires coordinated legal assistance across different countries.

Extradition Hub: methodology and development

Materials published on Extradition Hub are selected, reviewed and organised according to a structured editorial methodology, with particular attention to their practical relevance.

The project initially developed from a strong focus on Italian extradition and EAW case law and is progressively expanding its coverage through a growing network of lawyers and researchers from different jurisdictions.

Its ambition is to become a comprehensive global reference point for extradition and European Arrest Warrant law, bridging the gap between academic research, comparative analysis and day-to-day legal practice.
